On the first consultation a full medical case history will be taken. This is to ensure that you are safe to treat with osteopathy and that it may be of benefit to you. It may also reveal conditions for which you may need to be referred for further investigation.

If you are safe to treat and do not need to be referred it will enable a diagnosis to be made i.e. what brought you to this point?

Osteopaths use many of the same examination procedures and tests performed by GP’s. A thorough knowledge of anatomy and physiology (the way things work) is used with observation of your posture and a highly tuned sense of touch called palpation, to form a diagnosis.

To do this you will usually be asked to remove some of your clothing and then asked to perform some simple movements.

As with all manual therapies it may take a few days before you feel the benefit of any treatment. You may feel sore for 24hrs and occasionally some people experience an increase in symptoms before things settle down. This should not be a cause for alarm and maybe considered part of the body’s normal healing process.

If you have any concerns either before or after treatment please do not hesitate to call, we will be happy to offer advice.
