Mike Pickering BSC (Hons) Osteopathy, BMAS

Registered Osteopath Mike Pickering is pleased to be bringing osteopathy to the heart of Soho at James Hull Associates. As well as osteopathy he offers medical acupuncture (dry needling) and sports / deep soft tissue massage.

Acupuncture / dry needling can be very effective in reducing pain, encouraging blood flow into tight muscles or damaged tissue, the result of which is a calming down of the nervous system. It can be particularly good for problems such as Tennis elbow and Frozen Shoulder.

Mike is also a professional musician having performed around the world in many different settings including music for film, television and theatre. He first hurt his back in 1989 whilst on tour in Germany and somebody eventually manipulated his back enabling him to carry on playing. On returning to the UK he was recommended to go and see an osteopath and was amazed at the results.

This ignited an interest in the use of osteopathy, acupuncture and massage which later led to him qualifying with Bsc (HONS) Osteopathy from the London School of Osteopathy, 2006. Mike is a member of the British Medical Acupuncture Society and has a Masters Diploma in Sports massage with Active Foundation.

Mike on posture in the workplace

Perhaps unsurprisingly his dissertation research project focused on musicians’ injuries and the strains associated with playing an instrument. His research particularly into musicians postures, has led to an understanding of the effects of static workplace posture – sitting for hours at a desk or in front of a computer, or in a stressful workplace can set up postural aches and strains that if left unchecked may lead to pain or discomfort. These can seem trivial, but if persistent may have far reaching effects.

Movement is a sign of life, all living things are constantly moving even if they appear not to be. The body is in a dynamic state always adapting and trying to defend and repair itself. Modern life dictates that we spend long periods sitting, at a desk, in a car, on a train, in front of the television.

Do you find yourself shifting around trying to get comfortable as you sit, or constantly leaning on one arm or resting your chin in one hand?
These are all signs of a tired posture.

We see many people with pain to the upper back, neck head and shoulders, often the result of sitting at a computer for long periods. As well as treatment we can give advice on workplace ergonomics, exercises and stretches.
